What makes it cool…
We have been using this jig to edge our finished axes for nearly a year and it is so easy and fast to use. It works perfectly with the custom made Japanese diamond plates and diamond whetstone to give you an awesome edge every time.
After a lot of searching and testing we found these Japanese diamond stones that definitely fit the bill. This set consists of two aluminium blocks with two sharpening surfaces on each block. The 3 coarse sides are diamond plates that can be removed and replaced and the last finishing side is a 2mm thick section of diamond whetstone that is used to finish the edge.
The blocks have a CNC machined thread in both ends which has two advantages; firstly the guide rod is perfectly aligned with the stone surface to give an accurate edge ever time. Also the rod can be moved to the other end if half the stone wears so that you can get more life out of each surface.
If the stones are used correctly you can easily get hundreds of axes edged before replacement is required.
This jig works both on the bench (it has a M10 tapped thread in the base and it comes with a locking bolt) and also fits around an axe with the handle fitted, so you can quickly work on the edge at a woodchop if required.
The jig is manufactured from layered 3mm thick stainless steel. It is strong, rugged and accurate. There are 14 different angles to hold the stones ta which covers all the possible angles. Each guide rod hole is laser etched so you can quickly and easily identify which hole to use when you swap sides.
They are the perfect size to fit in your hand to finish both the bevel and edge of your axes. All these stones can be used dry, but we find that using water on the whetstone achieves a better edge and also extends the life of the stone. You can also the 400 grit diamond plate to keep the 3000 grit whetstone flat and fresh.
